Tariff Refunds: What to Expect

You’ve heard the news by now: the coffee tariffs levied in 2025 will be refunded. This is good news for everyone, but the rollout is going to be complex, and likely slow. We’ll keep you updated as the process develops.
As of April 20th, importers are eligible to file for full refunds on the tariffs deemed to be illegally applied. We’ve already begun the process of requesting refunds on every applicable container. When those funds are received, we will pass 100% back to you. No action is needed on your part.
The process will take time. CBP is processing claims in phases. Based on current guidance, initial refunds are expected to begin in Q3 2026, with additional payments possibly extending well into 2027. We'll be in touch directly as things become clearer for your specific purchases.
We also want to be honest: we can't confirm exact amounts or timing at the individual purchase level yet. We’re just at the beginning of a long process, and we won't give you numbers we can't stand behind. Because tariffs were financed alongside the coffee, the refunded tariff itself will be returned in full, but financing costs tied to carrying those tariffs are not refundable. All of the additional administrative, operational and accounting costs accrued as a result of these tariffs will be our sole burden.
Questions We've Been Hearing From You
What tariffs are being refunded?
Only IEEPA tariffs, the ones the Supreme Court struck down in February 2026. Green coffee was subject to these from April 2 through November 12, 2025. Section 301 and all other tariffs are not affected.
Do I need to do anything?
No. We are handling the process. We will return funds to you as they are received, and will communicate along the way.
When will I get a refund?
We’re in the queue now, but this will move at the speed of government. When we know, you’ll know. It could be as early as Q3, or it could be next year.
Will Onyx keep any portion of the refunds?
No. 100% of received refunds will be returned to the roasters whose purchases incurred the tariffs.
How will I receive my refund?
When we receive more information, we’ll share directly with you about the When and What of your tariff refund. The How is up to you. Would you rather receive a check, or a credit toward your next invoice?
